Children’s Religious Training Lesson

Deuteronomy 31:9-13

Children’s Religious Training

[9] And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel.
[10] And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles,
[11] When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.
[12] Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law:
[13] And that their children, which have not known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

Key Verse : “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”Proverbs 22:6

The subject for this lesson is religious training for children. Religious training is the purpose of your Sunday School class. Actually it is the purpose of the Sunday School in your church. It is also one of the purposes of the worship services in your church as well as prayer meetings and any other services your church may have.  Training about God, His commandments and His will is important in the establishment and development of a spiritual life.  The Lord’s house is not the only place where religious training should occur.  It pleases God when the things of God are taught in peoples’ homes also.  Actually it should begin  at home.

Instructions to teach

The memory selection from proverbs tells that a child should be trained the right way to live and he/she will remember it when he/she becomes an adult. In other words it will help them to know how to live their lives (especially morally and spiritually.) In the lesson text taken from the book of Deuteronomy, Moses gives the children of Israel some specific instructions about reading the law to teach those that would hear.  He specifically mentions the children which have not yet learned to fear the Lord.

Chapter 31 is not the only place in Deuteronomy where Moses instructs the people to teach.  Deuteronomy contains the instructions, warning, encouragement, and reminders that Moses spoke to the children of Israel shortly before his death and their entry into the “promised land”. Strong instructions to teach their children are given to the people by Moses in chapters 4, 6, and 11 in addition to chapter 31.  The emphasis Moses placed upon the people teaching their children about God and His statutes can be seen in Deuteronomy 6:6-9, “And these word, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlet between thine eyes.  And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.”

Obligation to learn

The devotional from Ephesians shows both sides of the obligation to God from people. “Children obey your parents in the Lord” is saying to the young, listen to your parents when they teach you and correct you in things in agreement with God’s commandments. Parents are also instructed in this scripture passage not to purposely stir up their children to make them angry but to encourage, train, instruct, rebuke and correct them in the ways of God.

What does this Lesson mean to YOU ?

A large portion of your obligation at your age is learning. It is important for you to learn about God. If you are unsaved, you need to learn about God and about His plan of salvation. It is important for you to learn these things so you will know that you need to seek Him for salvation. You need to seek the Lord when he lets you know you are lost and His spirit deals with you and draws you.  If you have been saved you need to learn more about God. It pleases Him when we want to know and learn more about Him. Learning more about God, His commandments, His people and His word will help you understand and find His will for your life.  Knowledge will help you to live a better and moral life.

It is also very important for you to learn about the things of God while you are young and to continually increase your knowledge as you get older. Before you know it your role will begin to change and in addition to still learning, you will start becoming a teacher.  You will become a teacher of something. Even if you never teach a formal class of any kind, others will observe your life and learn things from it.  You will be an example to someone. So the better, more godly your life the better you will be as a teacher. If one of your desires is to have a family some day, begin preparing yourself now so you will be able to teach your children about God.

God is providing you with a great opportunity to learn if you are in a good Sunday School class reading this book and discussing the lessons.  Take advantage of the opportunity.  Study on your own and ask questions of your parents, grandparents, Sunday School teacher, pastor, deacons or others in your church.

God is providing you with a great opportunity if you are reading this lesson even if you are not in a Sunday School class, in a church, or in a home where the things of God are taught.  You can contact the editor of this literature or the writer of these lessons.  We would be honored to try to answer questions you have. But most of all you can pray to God asking for His help. If you have not been saved, pray for Him to save you or get you to a place where you can be saved.  If you have been saved pray that God will provide a way for you to increase your knowledge of Him.
